Also known as flaxseeds these ancient seeds are a perfectly packaged powerhouse of natural goodness. Being high in omega-3 essential fatty acids, plant lignans and natural fibre, they are seriously good for your heart, soul and bowel.
Linseeds, whole or ground, do not need to be cooked and can be added to almost any dish, including breads, biscuits and cakes, to cooked or uncooked snack bars, to muesli mixes and porridges – even to curries and vegetable stews. You can sprinkle them on salads and breakfast cereals like you would other seeds.
You can grind whole linseed yourself in a high speed blender. Ground linseed can be mixed with water to create a vegan ‘flax egg’ which can be used in baking instead of eggs. For one ‘egg’ mix one tbsp ground linseed with 3 tbsp water and let it set into a gel for 10-15 minutes.
